Coupons, commonly known as the “second currency”, were the certificates used to buy food, clothing and other necessities under planned supply. They emerged in the mid-1950s and were abandoned in the early 1990s, in a period of almost 40 years. The details of the people eating, wearing, sheltering, using, and traveling during the coupon era accompanied with various kinds of coupons exhibited in this museum clearly outlined the social customs and life habits of the Chinese people of generations seeking for survival and happiness.
